Hello everyone! Wow, what busy days I have! After becoming one the finalists in the Blogfest 2008, I have lots of things to do at school so that I hardly have time to go blogging again! Going back to class to teach just grab my time away. But fortunately I have some free time now to continue updating this blog!

Lawang sewu, as people say, is exotic not only because of its magnificent style but also for the horror stories about this building. Many people admit that they ever see strange creatures or hear peculiar voices around the building. Because of the famous supernatural atmosphere, It became one of the places to hold the formerly famous TV program ”Uji Nyali” in Trans TV. In the TV program the contestant failed the test since he admitted seeing horrible creatures in the building, and decided to quit. People may have noticed the “spooky” atmosphere of the building even from outside. In addition, when we get inside this building, even in the daytime, we will indeed feel this atmosphere even stronger. Do you want to feel the strange atmosphere offered by Lawang sewu?? Why don’t you witness it by yourself?? Lawang sewu is extremely easy to find. It is located right in the middle of Semarang city near tugu Muda. Come on! Come here and see how brave you are!

Hi there! What comes to your mind when reading the above title? It seems contradictory, doesn’t it? How can something be beautiful and at the same time gloomy? Yup, it’s a little bit odd. However, it is true. The title above is just right to describe the dark but somehow exotic Lawang sewu. Where can you find it? You can only locate it here in Semarang.

Located at Gajah Raya street, The great Mosque of Central Java occupies a vast area of land around 10 hectares, and it is able to hold more than 13.000 people. This great mosque combines the traditional architectural style from the era of the “wali” with the universal Islam architecture.

The outstanding part of the mosque is the main dome which is decorated with sharp minaret on its four sides. People also say that the design is also inspired by Nabawi Mosque in Medina. The other amazing stuffs we can see here are six electric umbrellas, around 48 meters in diameter, which are used to protect the pilgrimages from the heat of the sun. The coloring and the interior of the mosque is carefully designed. The design is mostly influenced by Javanese cultures and also Islam cultures in general. It is obvious from some of the ornaments found inside the Mosque. We can see some wayang characters (puppet shadow), and Batik ornaments.

The whole area of the mosque includes radio station, offices, shops, rooms for training, hall for meetings, libraries and other facilities. The radio station usually broadcasts Islamic songs and teachings. In addition, the visitors can see the view of Semarang from the top of a tower near the main mosque. Soaring as high as 99 meters above the land, this tower is especially designed similar to the Kudus Mosque tower. The height of the tower is said to reflect the superiority of God. To be able to see the view of Semarang from the top of the tower we need to pay around Rp. 3000, and we can see the scenery clearly if we use the provided binoculars. However, we need to insert a coin of Rp. 500 to use those binoculars for about one and a half minute.

Beside the tower, visitor can also see the giant hand-written Al-Quran (Islam’s holy book) written by H Hayatuddin from UNSYIQ Wonosobo. Visitors can also the the replica of the great “Beduk” of Purworejo. Shortly, other than a place for religious purposes, this mosque is also an interesting place for all of family members to spend their free time. So, why don’t you visit this place??? See you.
